Some sofas shout; the ACME Etienne Sofa keeps its voice down. It is a beige linen sofa with a tight back, a tight seat and three accent pillows, and its only real statement is how little it tries to make one. That restraint suits renters, first apartments and anyone furnishing a modern living room around art, rugs or a view rather than around the couch.

Inside, a wooden inner frame carries full foam seat cushions, the kind that hold their shape without the softness of loose down. The tight back sofa design means no cushions to flip or fluff, which is a real advantage in a busy household. The legs are knocked down for shipping and attach when the piece arrives in its single carton. The ACME Etienne Sofa measures eighty-four inches wide, long enough for three adults, and the matching Etienne loveseat and swivel chair are offered in the same beige linen if you want a full set. In a Tampa townhouse with gray floors and white walls, the linen adds warmth without adding a strong color.
